"Il Poverello held the audience's attention from beginning to end through the Rose Ensemble's clever arrangement of material and the near-perfection of their execution. Beautiful, in-tune and well-balanced singing was matched with astonishing instrumental playing."

November 2010
with special guest narrator, author Patricia Hampl
and
David Burk, ‘ud and tar
Tim O’Keefe, riqq and dumbek

This program explores the maternal figure and the works of female musicians and mystics across the centuries, from the Virgin Mary to Minnesota’s own Abbie Betinis. Featuring the women musicians of The Rose Ensemble, this performance includes ethereal 13th-century chant and polyphony from the famous Las Huelgas convent (Burgos, Spain), traditional women’s songs of the Cochin Jewish tradition of Kerala (India); medieval Irish-language laments, weaving songs and fiddle tunes from Cape Breton Island, as well as the other-worldly chant of 12th-century mystic nun Hildegard von Bingen. CANDLELIGHT CONCERT!
THE MOURNERS: Music from the Courts of the Burgundian Dukes
February 2011
with special guests:
Ali Momeni, visual artist (Minneapolis Art on Wheels)
Ensemble Collinetto:
Isacco Colombo, shawm, bagpipe, fife and drum (Italy)
Dani Pelagatti, bombard (Switzerland)
Sergej Yemelyanenkov, slide trumpet and sackbut (Ukraine)
In association with Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts is hosting a national touring exhibition of alabaster tomb sculptures (mourners) from the sarcophagus of 15th-century Burgundian duke, Jean sans Peur (John the Fearless). As part of the exhibit, The Rose Ensemble has created a special companion concert of music from medieval and Renaissance France. Hear deep and resonant choral music, intimate Troubadour songs of love and loss, and heraldic courtly dances performed by an early wind consort from throughout Europe. For this remarkable event, we've commissioned a new work by Minnesota composer William Beckstrand, and through the innovative artistry of Ali Momeni, a breathtaking display of images of the sculptures will be projected against interior walls during the concerts, giving listeners a striking visual sense of the world in which these musicians and mourners lived and died. A feast for the ears and eyes that you simply won't want to miss!
